This special “Pop-Up” event hosted by the Neal Taylor Nature Center for the Santa Ynez Valley Natural History Society includes a visit to the Center and a docent-led introduction to the living exhibit of our local bats and the opportunity to watch them come out of their roosting boxes to feed at dusk. There are approximately 200=plus bats in each of the boxes. The first of two bat boxes was built by a nature center volunteer in 2013-2014. The bats are all the same species, the California myotis (Myotis californicus). They are among North America’s smallest, enabling them to feed on especially tiny insect prey.

The Neal Taylor Nature Center is a private non-profit within Cachuma Lake Recreation Area. The Center offers interpretive exhibits and docent-lead talks on the natural history of the Santa Barbara area, as well as special events such as this one.
