Karen, second from left, is standing beneath an extraordinarily large (over 20 feet tall) holly-leaved cherry (Prunus illicifolia). The thin, outside layer of this plant's fruit is eaten fresh or dried, but the pit itself requires special processing to reduce its toxicity before consumption.
