Fall Plant Sale
Saturday, September 27 and Sunday, September 28, 10 am to 2 pm

Opens at 9 am on Saturday to SYVNHS members only!

Dunn Middle School in Los Olivos (Roblar and Hwy 154).

Our third annual fall plant sale will again feature many native plants propagated from materials of local origin, including native grasses and hard–to-find bulbs, as well as non-natives that thrive in our area. Unique selections will be offered by UC Sedgwick Reserve Nursery and Manzanita Nursery—specialists in Santa Ynez Valley horticulture—as well as from other regional  sources. Experts will be on hand for consultation.

The sale is a perfect opportunity to find the right plant to fit a difficult location, to attract birds and butterflies, or to add an interesting element to your garden. Plants are carefully selected for their resilience, low-maintenance, and suitability for local conditions.  In addition, this year’s sale we will try to round up as many different native succulents as we can. This event is a fundraiser for the educational programs and field trips of the Society, so please make plans to stop by the sale to browse and shop.

On behalf of the Santa Ynez Valley Natural History Society, I would like to thank all of the people who contributed to the very successful “First Annual” Plant Sale. The amount of energy you generated was extraordinary! Nancy Stearns did a fabulous job as volunteer coordinator; Carey McKinnon got the job done with fliers and banner; Tim Matthews was there for every committee meeting and nursery visit, and both days of the sale. Assuring that our sale did not go unnoticed, John Evarts and Margie Popper handled the press releases and event mailing. It seemed like Bill Turpin and Ron Griffin were always unloading and arranging plants. Steve Shulz was always on hand to stimulate enthusiasm for native plants. Susan Brooks and Laura Matthews were so professional at the sales table. Ben Munger got the road signs up; Puck Erickson provided goodies on Saturday morning. Michael and Mary Jane West-Delgado brought bulbs and butterflies. Charlie Stauffer, Carol Weingarter, Barbara Goldstein, Len Fleckenstein Joel Helgessen, and Shirley Di Croce all provided invaluable customer support and assistance.
Thanks to Marc and Julie Kummel, and Dunn School, for arranging and providing us with a superb location - plenty of space, easy to find. Not only that, but Marc and Julie also brought us some plants that they grew. Of course, the plants - for those, we thank David and Rayne Fross of Native Sons Nursery; Steve Shulz and Nancy Stearns of the Native Plant Nursery at Sedgwick Reserve; Michael and Mary Jane West-Delgado for bulbs and butterflies; and Ron and Diane Griffin of Manzanita Nursery. Special thanks go to Manzanita Nursery for enabling us to re-stock after that Saturday morning rush! The Cachuma Press supplied us with books, including some donated “hurts” that I believe sold out completely and will surely propagate interest in native plants here in the Valley.
We had a very successful first annual plant sale. Not only did we add funding to our society, but we fulfilled a need in the community. A lot of interest and enthusiasm was generated which ultimately will be directed towards the greater appreciation of the natural world..
